Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mr. William "Bill" Truman Broderick, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2013 at the age of 89.
Bill was born January 6, 1924, in Bay City, Michigan, to the late Owen and the late Salome Broderick. After graduating from high school in Bay City, Michigan, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy from August 1942 through October 1945. His highest rank was Signalman Second Class and he received the World War II Victory Decoration Medal. He served on two ships in the Pacific.
In November 1942, while stationed at Butler University Signal School in Indianpolis, Indiana, he met Marilyn Williams, who would later become his wife. They were both roller skating, but didn't meet until leaving, when he walked her to her street car line and,...as they say, the rest is history! They were married November 9, 1944 in Bay City while Bill was on leave. After the war, they lived in Bay City, where two of their daughters were born. In 1949, Bill and Marilyn moved to Miami, Florida, where another daughter and their son was born. Bill and his family were members of Miami Shores Baptist Church. Bill served as a deacon, RA leader, children's Sunday School teacher and had 20 years of perfect attendance for Sunday School. Bill worked as an architect and statewide contractor of Dade County, Florida. He was project manager for the Dade County Public Safety Building and supervised preliminary construction of the Dade County Metro Zoo, now known as Zoo Miami. He retired in 1989 after 30 years. In 1991, Bill and Marilyn moved to Blairsville, where Bill designed and worked day and night, building their log home. They joined First Baptist Church of Blairsville. Bill served as a deacon and was project manager for the building of the new sanctuary. In 2010 Bill received the Honorary Title of Deacon Emeritus. He served with the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Team, and the Beacon Team. He loved his chainsaw! Bill enjoyed fishing, growing orchids, gardening, and needlework. He loved to make woodwork projects for others; loved to drive and travel.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters: Fern Brown, Helma Kintner, Mariam Goold, and June Belleville. His surviving sister, Muriel, lives in Bay City, Michigan.Bill leaves behind many friends, and many family members, all of whom will miss him dearly - especially his wife of 68 years, Marilyn Williams Broderick; their children: Kathy Gales (Chris); Tina Hourihan (George); Robin DeYoung (Jack); and Ken Broderick (Susan); He also has 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Bill have been scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at First Baptist Church of Blairsville, with Dr. Fred Lodge and Rev. Danny Parris officiating. The body will lie instate at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Military honors will be presented by North Georgia Honor Guard. Visitation will be at Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville on Friday, April 26, 2013, with the family especially meeting with friends between the hours of 6 until 9 p.m. The family has requested that the deacons of First Baptist Church of Blairsville serve as honorary escort to the family.
