Mr. William Clinton Hayes, age 69 of Murphy, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2014, at Murphy Medical Center. Mr. Hayes was born October 1, 1945, in Murphy, NC to the late Raymond and Nina Mashburn Hayes. He was a member of Unaka Baptist Church for 30 years and had served as a deacon since 1995. Mr. Hayes served his church in many different positions. At the time of his death he was serving as chairman. He was a member of the Unaka Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years and had served as Chief for a number of those years. He worked as a supervisor at Baker Furniture till the plant closed and was President of the Local Wood Worker Union of America. Mr. Hayes loved his family, grand kids, church, and community. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone that needed it. He was co-owner of Autumn Halls of Unaka where he enjoyed cooking and taking care of the residents. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by brothers, James Hayes and Raymond Hayes, Jr., sisters, Georgia O'dell, Bessie McClegmore and Juanita Hargreave..
Survivors include: wife, Shirley Ann Hayes, daughter, Shelly Hayes Debty and husband William, grandchildren, Madison Debty, Jada Johnson, and Chase Johnson, sisters, Margie Kephart and Novella Dockery, brother, John Hayes, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services: Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Unaka Baptist Church with the Rev. Rob Dillard and Rev. Dallas Crowder officiating. Music provided by: the church choir, David Gabrielli, Lewis Jones, Dorothy Smith and Sherry Pullium. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers: members of Unaka Volunteer Fire Department.
