William Calvert "Coach" Sandberg, of Flintstone, GA. went to be with The Lord on Thursday, October 5, 2017. He was a member of the Lookout Baptist Church and served his country in the U S Army during the Vietnam War.
Bill attended Walker Junior College and went on to graduate from Jacksonville State University. He taught and coached in several area Georgia Schools and retired from the Walker County School System as a Teacher and Athletic Coach. He was the first Head Coach of Ridgeland High School Class of 89 - 90. He was an active member and held several positions in the Chattanooga/Lafayette Emmaus Community.
He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America - Chapter 203, a member of the Daylight Thompkin's Masonic Lodge F&AM #764, a member of the Rossville Masonic Lodge F&AM #397, a member of the Alhambra Shrine Temple in Chattanooga, TN. He was also a member of the VFW Post 3679 and the American Legion Post 214. He held the following VFW State Chair Positions, 2011-2012 department Chief of Staff (for Commander Pledge Cannon) 2012-2013 VFW District 1 Commander, 2013-2014 State Judge Advocate, 2014-2015 State Jr. Vice Commander, 2015-2016 State Sr. Vice Commander, 2016-2017 State Commander.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Calvert and Ida Sandberg; one half-brother, Tommy Dane.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janice Sandberg; Step children, Christina (Ben) Culpepper and Johnathan Matthews; one grandson, Jaxon Culpepper; one niece and two nephews.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, Oct. 7th from noon until 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 8th up to the hour of service at the funeral home.
Funeral service will be held on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor, Terry Burns officiating.
Interment will be on Tuesday, Oct. 10th at 1:30 p.m. in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with honors.
