Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee, in celebration of her wonderful life, announces memorial services for Vivian Audley Moyer, age 102, of Hiawassee, Georgia, who passed away quietly and comfortably on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at her home surrounded by her many friends, her loving family and the caring staff of Brasstown Manor Assisted Living Center.
Vi was born on July 22, 1911 in Wolsey, SD, where she learned to embrace faith, family and traditional farm values that were instilled in her by her parents. She recalled her teenage years as busy, but filled with fun and laughter. Vi attended Eastern State Teachers College while waiting tables at the "College Campus Shack" and graduated in 1931. Vi taught primary school for several years and married Ed, who was her principal and faithfully supported his career as he later became superintendent. She would exhibit social grace and elegance as they attended a variety of functions together entertaining friends and dancing to the beat of "big band" music. Her devotion to education, influence, values and actions will undoubtedly impact many generations to come.
A long time resident of Briarcliff Manor, NY; she and Ed retired to Punta Gorda Isles in Florida where Vi was a volunteer at the local hospital. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Port Charlotte, where singing in the choir was a family enjoyment. She and Ed were founders of the Small World nursery school at the church. Vi would also perform with the Sweet Adeline's singing group in a number of competitions. She was a resident of Punta Gorda for more than 30 years before moving to the North Georgia Mountains to be near her children. Her life could fill a volume of books! She had many interests, but singing was her passion. With a love of travel and an interest in other cultures she had visited much of Europe, parts of Japan and Indonesia never meeting a stranger along the way. Young at heart, she was known to pedal into town on her bicycle, built for two for coffee until she was 90. She even went to exercise classes regularly until she was 100!
She will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her, but especially missed by her family: daughter, Judy Sullivan of Sunset, SC and son, Mel Moyer of Hayesville, NC. 11 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren also share in her legacy. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Ed Moyer; daughter, Linda Sue Biedermann and son, Donald Moyer.
Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Towns & Union County Habitat for Humanity, P.O Box 270, Young Harris, GA 30582.
