Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mr. Vernon Chambers, age 90, of Blairsville, who passed away in the early morning of Friday, January 24, 2014.
Mr. Chambers was born August 26, 1923 in Union County to the late Will & Roselle (Lowe) Chambers. The youngest boy of 11 siblings, Vernon grew up knowing the value of hard work and savings. He married the love of his life, Ruby at age 19 and spent the next 63 years together raising children, cattle and hogs. To make ends meet he would also work in logging and ran a sawmill. Vernon and his son, Yeona decided to go into business together and opened Chambers Slaughter House and operated it for 35 years. With a love for hunting and armed with the best dogs in the tri-state area, Vernon was feared by Raccoon's everywhere. He was a good natured person who was always straight to the point. Quick witted he always loved a good joke. Often, Vernon would sit and tell tall tales of growing up in the mountains (some of which have gotten just a little bit better over time). He thought a lot of his niece, Sybil who has been his caregiver in recent years.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory many friends and his family: son & daughter-in-law, Yeona & Ethel Chambers; grandson's, Stacy Chambers & Curtis Teague, great granddaughter Cameron Teaugue and sister, Connie Mae Akins. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Ruby Morgan Chambers and grandson, Billy Chambers.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Seay officiating. Interment will follow in Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, on Saturday, January 25, 2014, with the family especially meeting with friends between the hours of 5 until 8 p.m. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Carson Owenby, Richard Corn, Jeff Butts, Harold Ledford, Charles Wright and Billy Beavers
