Vaughn Barrett

Vaughn Barrett, 101, of Hiawassee, Ga, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at Chatuge Regional Nursing Home. Vaughn was born May 13, 1921, in Hiawassee, Ga to Avery and Tassie Barrett. 

Vaughn was preceded in death by spouse, Norene Barrett; father, Avery Barrett; mother, Tassie Sims Barrett; daughter, Linda Barrett; brother, Earl Barrett; brother, Everett Barrett; brother, Homer Barrett; stepmother Olla Mae Barrett.

He is survived by his daughter Karen (John R.) Gallogly; daughter Mitzi (Jeff) Walker; sister Essie Ash; brother Truman Barrett; brother Roy Barrett; grandchild Jason McCoy; grandchild LaBreeska McCoy; grandchild Lacey Lewis; grandchild John-Michael Gallogly; 7 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.

A lifelong resient of Towns County, he was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. He was the oldest living World War II veteran in Towns county. He served in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Corporal. Before enlisting in the service, he worked in the C.C.S and was involved in clearing the roads to Crater Lake.  He was known as a great farmer, and always grew two large gardens. He always gave away the first fruits from each crop. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 1st, 2023 at 2:30 pm at Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee with Pastor Darrell Barrett officiating. Visitation will take place on Saturday, April 1st, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee. After the funeral service, burial will be in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Bradley Thomas officiating. Military honors will be presented by North Georgia Honor Guard.

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers; Jason McCoy, Jake McCoy, Joe Rogers, John-Michael Gallogly, Jimmy Messer, Sidney Barrett, and Bradley McCoy. 

The following gentlemen will serve as honorary pallbearers: Darrell Barrett, Danny Barrett, Truman Barrett, and Roy Barrett.
