Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee announces the Funeral Services for Vance Worth Nichols, age 91, of Hiawassee, Georgia, who passed away Sunday, December 10, 2017, at Eternal Hope Hospice in Griffin, Georgia.
Vance was born May 7, 1926 in Young Harris, Georgia to the late Taylor W. and Vallie G. Nichols. Vance was a very hard worker, retiring from Eastern Airlines. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II, under General George Patton. His family meant the world to Vance, and spending time with them was at the top of his list. Buying and selling cars was a past-time he enjoyed, but Vance was known to do "a little bit of everything". Vance was blessed with a generous, giving spirit about him. Vance loved buying fruit from local fruit stands and making up fruit baskets to give to friends and neighbors. Years ago, when work was difficult to find, Vance would take the initiative to travel up to the Northern States to make ends meet. Because of his strong work ethic, He always found work and managed to help numerous local men become employed. Another example of how he always thought of others needs before his own.
He will be warmly remembered by all who knew him, but especially missed by his family: his son, Steve Worth Nichols; a daughter, Linda Lawhorn; granddaughters: Melissa Nichols and Holly Kidd; great grandson, Taylor Worth Hannigan; Beloved sister-in-law, Mary Lou Thurman; and son-in-law, Jesse Lawhorn. Preceding Vance in death was his wife, Maxine Thurman Nichols; a brother, Doyle Nichols, and a sister, Caroline Nichols.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening, December 13, 2017, from 6 until 8 PM.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Young Harris with Military Honors provided by the North Georgia Honor Guard.
