Vallie Moore Houston went to be with her Savior on August 3rd, 2024. Vallie was born on November 20, 1931 to the late Richard Marson Moore and Pearl Moore of Murphy, North Carolina. Born into a large and loving family settled in a mountain valley at the crook of the verdant mountains, Vallie grew up in the close-knit Peachtree community of Murphy where she developed her lifelong love of Jesus, flowers, and familial ties.
Vallie was a 1952 graduate of Murphy High School, and she enjoyed attending her class reunions-including her 70th. Vallie worked at the Bell South telephone company as an operator, and she owned and operated the family store Vestal's in Epworth for 16 years. She was an active member of Lebanon Baptist Church in Epworth, Georgia for 64 years.
Vallie lived her faith in countless ways: she was a kind person and showed her love for others by cooking meals and helping those in need. She was always the first to offer help to anyone who needed it and would work tirelessly. She was a proponent of hard work-and her favorite saying was "a rolling stone gathers no moss." Vallie certainly never did, and she remained active and caring even in her elder years.
Called Val by those closest to her, her family will remember her presence in their lives as she loved and cared for all of them. She always sent birthday greetings, gave generous and thoughtful gifts, checked on them during poor weather, and doted on the children in the family. She even cared for those after they had passed, making sure she honored them with handmade beautiful decorations on family memorial stones. Vallie was known for her honest and lovingly given advice, her spirited political opinions, and the glint in her eye when she told hilarious and witty jokes that made others around her frequently laugh. She will be missed and mourned by many.
Vallie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sam Houston; infant daughter Sheila; mother Pearl Moore, father Richard Marson Moore; brothers R.M., Ferd, Wayne, and Luke Moore all of the Peachtree Community in Murphy, NC as well as twin sister Allie Christopher of Epworth, Georgia, sister Grace Galloway also of Epworth, Georgia, and sisters Wilma Leatherwood and Frances Gulley of Murphy, NC.
She is survived by her sister Inez Pickelsimer of Murphy, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vallie's service will be at Lebanon Baptist Church in Epworth, GA on Monday, August 5th with visitation from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and funeral beginning at 2 p.m. Officiants are Claude Mathis, Delmar Davenport, and Charlie Wellham, and pallbearers are Caleb Searcy, Erick Frum, David Frum, Stacy Galloway, Tim Lents, and John Scott Deal.
