William Todd Reece died on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Valley View nursing care facility in Andrews. He was 76 at the time of his death.
Todd was born on December 9, 1936 in Andrews, NC, to parents Wade A. Reece and Birdie W. Reece. He grew up in Andrews, alongside older brother Jerry W. Reece.
As a young man he spent time at his father's Ford dealership, Reece Motor Company, and developed a lifelong relationship with the banjo and bluegrass music. Todd attended the University of North Carolina (Go Heels!), where he earned a degree in Journalism.
He worked in Franklin, NC and Andrews, NC on local newspapers, where he met his wife, Dustina W. Reece while covering local affairs as the editor of the Andrews Journal. Todd spent many years in politics, working in Washington for Representative Charles Jonas, before moving into state politics with positions as the head of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), and a leader in the Republican Party in North Carolina.
Todd and family moved back to Andrews in 1979 to be near aging parents. Todd invested time and energy into Andrews United Methodist Church, local and state politics, and family. He was frequently seen at sporting venues over the years as an ardent supporter of his children's school sports careers.
He served multiple terms as County Manager for Cherokee County. A walking database of places, people and facts (often referred to by family as “the Oracle”), he finished his working years expanding and upgrading the county 911 emergency response address database.
Todd is survived by his wife, Dustina Reece of Andrews; children, Thad Reece and his wife, Allison, of Charlotte, and Emily Burch and her husband, Brent, of Andrews; grandchildren, Jonathan Burch, Graham Burch, and Jack Reece; nephew, Matt Reece and his wife, Teresa; and niece, Leah Hill and her husband, Jeff. He is preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Reece (1991).
Services will be held Today at Andrews United Methodist Church with a viewing and visitation with the family from 12-2, and services starting at 2 p.m.
The officiant will be Rev. Mike Macdonald. Pallbearers will be Thad Reece, Brent Burch, Matt Reece, Jeff Hill, Eddie Hoilman, and Scott Haney. Todd will be interred in Woodlawn Cemetery in Franklin, NC.
The family would like to thank Andrews United Methodist Church, Dr. Tom Clayton, the staff at Valley View Care and Rehabilitation Center, and all the friends who have supported Todd and the family over the years, and in recent care and love of Todd. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Andrews United Methodist Church in Memory of Todd.
