Susan Dianne Fowler (Dickson)

November 7, 1954 — August 18, 2013

Susan Dianne Dickson Fowler, “Scoot” to her daddy and “Susie” to her husband, Bruce, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, August 18th, 2013 at her home in Morganton, Georgia. Susan was 58 years old when her beautiful life was cut short by pancreatic cancer.

Susan was born November 7, 1954, in Greenwood, South Carolina to Ray and Sue Dickson. She was the only child of this military family, but enjoyed many summers with her Granny Vaughn and cousins Terrie, Tracey, and Tammy. Susan graduated with honors from Towers High School in 1972, and before heading on to higher education, met the love of her life, Bruce Fowler. The two, having been set up on a blind date by Bruce's dad Aubrey, fell instantly in love. Bruce went home that night and told his mom, “I met the girl I am going to marry.” That statement came true 17 days later when the two became engaged at Underground Atlanta, and wed 45 days after that. Bruce is quoted as saying, “No one was more perfect for me. I would not change a thing, except to add days to our perfect 41 years.” Susan began working while Bruce completed his degree from the school of forestry at UGA, and upon graduation, the two moved to Amicalola Falls State Park where Bruce became a park ranger. It was on top of this mountain where Susan and Bruce brought Bruce Jr. Into the world, their only child. The birth of a child brought a move to Atlanta for the couple where Susan began working in the education field as an administrative assistant. She met many friends and touched many lives working at Clayton State College, Institute of Paper Science and Technology, and finally the Southern Region Educational Board.

Susan's hobbies were limited, as she was more interested in supporting those around her in their endeavors. Fall Friday and eventually Saturdays would be consumed by football, as she was the best team mom and cheerleader a football team ever had. Susan loved the outdoors, and would spend many afternoons in her yard. When Bruce Jr. married his high school sweetheart, Heather, Susan eventually became Nana to her four grandchildren, and gained the loving daughter she never had. Susan and Heather's relationship grew to be very strong and she would want everyone to know she had a daughter as well as a son. She and Bruce maintained a God-centered home and she modeled love and compassion to her family. Susan considered her greatest achievement to be her family.

If you knew Susan, you knew her love of animals. Never once was the Fowler house without an animal running around. From dogs to cats to goats and chickens, Susan's last animals were Buddy, Annie, and Dottie. Her love is evident in her request that in lieu of flowers to please make donations to the Humane Society of Blue Ridge. Her pets became part of her family, and Susan consumed her life with her family.

Susan is survived by her mother, Sue Dickson, of Morganton, her husband, Bruce Fowler, Sr., of Morganton, her son Bruce Jr., known as “Bucky” to her, and his wife, Heather of McDonough, GA. Her four grandchildren are Celeste, Chandler, Melody, and Makenna. Losing their daughter in law, who had became more of a daughter, are Aubrey “Bob”, and Irene Fowler of Stone Mountain, GA. Her brothers-in-law, Aubrey Fowler, Jr and his wife Elaine Fowler, as well as Gary Fowler. A host of cousins, nieces, and nephews including Aubrey Fowler III, Greg Fowler, David Fowler, Tracey West, Tammy Gilreath, Terrie Green and Kevin Williamson. A host of friends who are too numerous to list were more like brothers and sister than friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Ray Dickson, of Morganton.

The viewing and visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at Henry Cochran Funeral Home in Blue Ridge, GA from 6-9 pm. Her funeral will be held at the chapel in Cochran funeral home at 2 pm on Wednesday the 21st, with a grave side service at Hemptown Baptist Church on Old Highway 76.

Susan was a devoted lady to her family. Her devotion extended to her friends, as she was the finest friend a person could have. She shared her devotion to God with her family and friends, and they take consolation in knowing they will see her again one day in Heaven. To sum up Susan's life is three words would be easy, as it is a description that would make her proud... Wife, Mom, Nana.
