Spencer Conrad Lewis Sr. of Blairsville passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 12th after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 91 years young.
Spencer loved being a St. Patty baby born on March 17th, 1933, in Decatur, Georgia to the late Roy Leon Lewis and Grace Brown Lewis. He was the youngest of 5 children spoiled by his older siblings. He was a 1950 graduate of Druid Hills High School and then Georgia State with a Bachelor in Science. He was a heating and air system salesman for most of his career. He won multiple company competitions which allowed him and his wife Celeste to travel to exciting places including Hawaii, Spain, and Canada. Around 1980 he became concerned for people's personal safety and started his own company with a personal protection device called P.A.L. Later, he and Celeste relocated to Blairsville to be near grandchildren, and he went back into the heating and air business until he retired.
Spencer was blessed to have loved two beautiful women during his lifetime; Celeste Lewis (deceased) for 61 years of marriage and Pat Lewis (surviving), preceded by her late former husband Harry E. Smith of 28 years, for the past 5 years. He was a loving dad to Spencer Jr. and Evelyn and was affectionately known as Pop to his six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Spencer enjoyed life and most of the time he had a smile ready and waiting for you. He loved being outdoors whether it was hunting, fishing, camping, or golfing. He loved a good story as well as telling good stories. Later in life, he took up flying and loved taking up friends and family up in the air in his own plane. He was an avid tinker-er on cars and spent many a Saturday morning in his garage working on his cars. He made the family tradition of cooking pancakes on Sunday morning. Most importantly, he loved Jesus and was not ashamed to say he was a follower of Christ and a member of First Baptist Church. Now, he is experiencing the supreme love and joy of being in Christ's presence.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Lewis, son Spencer Lewis Jr of Beaufort, SC, daughter Evelyn (David) Ueltzen of Blairsville, stepdaughter Ivy (Greg) Leate of Wellington, FL, and Vicky Champlin of Jasper, Georgia. Grandchildren Matthew (Julia) Ueltzen, Bonnie (Marc) Nicklien, Tanner (Chelsea) Ueltzen, Ashley Lewis, Blake Lewis and Cody Lewis. Great-grandchildren are Carolina (Sean) Ross, Damon Ueltzen, Landon Ueltzen, Isaac Nicklien, Whitney Nicklien, Chase Ueltzen, Eliza Ueltzen, Macey Ueltzen, Tyler Potter, Riley Potter, and Silas Zywick. Great-great-grandchildren is Octavia Ross; and sister Judy Shackleford of Fayetteville, NC. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
