Shirley Sonnenfeld passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 10, 2023, at Brasstown Manor in Hiawassee, Ga at the age of 100 1/2 old. She was born in Bethlehem, Pa on Sept 12, 1922 and was the longest resident at Brasstown Manor for 14yrs. She was the oldest surviving WW II female veteran in Towns County and was honored with a flag that is hanging at the Hiawassee park square. She and her husband, Martin, retired to Sarasota, FL where they lived for 24 yrs, then moved to Brasstown Manor in Hiawassee, Ga. to be closer to family. She loved reading books, sitting outside in the sun, going for boat rides, going out to lunch, and being with family.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Martin and survived by their 3 daughters, Anita Adelson, Nancy Simile, & Sandra Smelker and their spouses; 4 grandchildren Jim & Patrick Beahm and their spouses, Hadara Katarski and her spouse & Ben Adelson. She also has 8 great-grandchildren.
Shirley was a member of Temple Beth Sholom in Sarasota, FL where she will be buried next to her husband in a gravesite service.
