The Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces the death of Mrs. Roxie Jane Owenby, age 95, of Blairsville, passed away peacefully at Union County Nursing Home on Thursday, October 25, 2012.
Mrs. Owenby was born in Brasstown, North Carolina on May 21, 1917 to the late Caney & Hattie Miller Dockery. She grew up in a family of 13 brothers and sisters. Although she did work in the textile industry some, Roxie was a loving homemaker for most of her life, raising her 5 children and instilling her values and sharing her love was very important to her. Together with her family they would grow gardens of both flowers to look at and fresh vegetables to eat. A wonderful blend of beauty and practicality, much like Roxie. Roxie was also known for her sewing and crocheting. She had a unique sense of humor and was a blessing to have around because of the constant big smile she always wore. She liked music in all forms. She had taken up buck dancing, played the fiddle some, but was very talented at picking the banjo. Roxie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Howard W. Owenby; her parents; brothers, Homer, Elmer, Ed, Virgil, Verlin, and Glen Dockery; and sisters, Valerie Rogers, Ruby Teems, Pearl Owenby and Stella Giles.
She will be fondly remembered by all who have known her, but especially missed by her family: her five wonderful children- daughters, Lela Daniel, Pauline Hedrick and Lucille Bailey; daughter & son-in-law, Lois & Neal Griggs; son & daughter-in-law, Lloyd & Nancy Owenby; sisters, Opal Wooten and Verdia Anderson; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and 21 great great grandchildren. The legacy that Roxie leaves behind will certainly live forever.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 27, 2012 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. R.L Martin officiating. Music will be provided by Dorothy and Tommy Dockery and Willa Belle Kerney. Nephews will serve as pallbearers: Glen Teems, Robbie Wooten, Jerry Dockery, Chuck Rogers, Roger Giles and Larry Owenby. She will be laid to rest in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.
