Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mr. Rodney Byron McCombs, age 80, of Blairsville, Georgia, who passed away Friday, September 13, 2013.
Rodney was a faithful husband and father with an unfaltering love for his family. Rodney was born August 3, 1933 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Mildred Elizabeth Neville and Howard Mason McCombs. He grew up with one brother and sister. He was preceded in death by Eugene (Gene) McCombs. He is survived by sister Barbara Hogan, 86.
Rodney worked a variety of part time jobs in order to work his way through college. He graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in finance. He began his banking career at the Dania Bank as a file clerk. In 15 years he reached the position of Executive Vice President. At the age of 40 he was appointed President, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
After reaching the pinnacle of success in his profession he resigned his position as President to move his family to Blairsville, Georgia in 1977. For years his family had visited relatives in Blairsville. When the opportunity to buy a farm in Blairsville presented itself, Rodney risked all he had achieved to move his family. He loved the mountains and believed it would be the best environment to raise his family.
At that time with only one bank in Blairsville, there were not many opportunities, so Rodney took a position as a Vice President at the First National Bank of Habersham County in Cornelia. He made the daily commute to Habersham for four years until a group of men approached him with the proposition of opening a new bank in Blairsville.
In 1982, First National Bank of Union County was formed and Rodney was named the President and CEO. This opportunity allowed him to fulfill his dream of serving in a small town community while raising his family. During this time Rodney served on the Union County Chamber of Commerce and the Union County Historical Society. He was a charter member of the Union County Rotary Club and served as a president of the Quarterback and Tip-Off Clubs at Union County High School. Several years after a merger of First National Bank of Union County with Century South Banks, Rodney was blessed to have the opportunity to finish out his career working at United Community Bank in Blairsville with many people he respected and knew so well.
Rodney is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Ann McCombs: three children, and eight grandchildren: son, Byron McCombs, married to Diane of Blairsville, GA and their children: Matthew, 24; Morgan, 22; Rhett 18, and Parker, 15; daughter, Kim Griffin, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and her children: Ryan, 25; and Megan, 22; son, Howard McCombs, married to Donna, of Blairsville, Georgia, and their children, Mason, 11, and Mia, 10.
Rodney loved his family and loved supporting them. He would move heaven and earth to attend his children and grandchildren's school activities and sporting events. He had an unquenchable thirst to know how and what was going on in each of their lives. While very thankful for the many years we had together, Rodney will be sorely missed by his family and loved ones who look forward to seeing him again.
