The Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville announces Funeral Services for Robert "Bob" Head, Jr., who passed away at the age of 79.
Bob was the son of the late Robert L. Head, Sr. and the late Julia Kelley Head and graduated from Union County High School in 1957. In 1959, he graduated from Young Harris College and finished his education with a Master's of Business Administration from Georgia State University. Bob married Carol Fleming on November 19, 1960, and then went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army and the Georgia Air National Guard. He purchased Robert L. Head Building Supply from his dad, and also started Head-Westgate Corporation in 1972, which was a commercial construction and leasing company. In 1991, Bob began Mountain Building Supply with his son, Robert, and then sold it to him in 1998.
Being very civic minded and community oriented, Bob would insert value to whatever organization that he belonged to. He did so, not for notoriety or accolades, but for the love of his mountain hometown. In fact, Bob was known to be a most humble man, he would prefer to work behind the scenes and gently guide and direct. Any recognition that he would receive would be almost embarrassing, he felt that in everything God should get the honor and glory. His love for Blairsville and Union County is evident by the positive impact of his contributions. Bob realized at an early age that relationships are what build business and adopted a philosophy of servant leadership well before it became a business buzzword. He put a high priority on the people that he served. His most important relationship was his relationship and faith with Jesus Christ. Bob was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Union County. He was involved in numerous ministries within the church body and has been instrumental in helping to shape that church into what it is today. Other organizations include the Downtown Development Authority, Rotary Club, and the Masonic Lodge. He served under former Governor Zell Miller on the Industry, Trade and Tourism Board for the State of Georgia. Bob was one of the founders of United Community Bank, serving as the Chairman of the Board until 2014. Also, he served on the Board of Trustees and Executive Board for Young Harris College. Bob loved to hike the trails of North Georgia and Western North Carolina.
