On Saturday June 13, 2009, Robert "Bob" Gene Hart, Sr. passed away in Murphy, NC at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Frostburg MD on May 17, 1936 to John & Patricia Hart and grew up in Emporium, PA. He was the brother to Jacqueline (Emporium,PA), Harland (Devlin, NY), George (Emporium,PA) and predeceased by Susie (Ridgley,WV).
He is survived by his wife, Grace Hart (Murphy, NC), and 3 children, Robert Gene Hart Jr. and wife Sharon Hart (Jackson, GA), William Pierson Hart and wife Melissa Hart (Cornelius, NC) and Bethany Anne Hart Bobus (Hot Springs, AR). He was the grandfather of Savanah Hart Black, Janel Hart Reed, Kelsey Hart, Chance Hart and Haley Bobus. He was also the great-grandfather of Jadyn Olivia Reed. He is also survived by a number of other beloved family members, three of whom were particularly special to him were his wife's sister, Phyllis Terry, niece Cheryl Terry, and grand-niece, McKenzie Terry.
After high school Bob joined the Marines at age 17. He served as a Marine for six years from 1951-1957 attaining the rank of Sergeant before going back home to PA.
On Sept 12 1959, he married Grace Smith in Emporium, PA and enjoyed a wonderful and loving marriage together. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this fall. After the military, Bob worked for Reynolds Aluminum for 32 years. The first 18 years he worked in Chester, PA then transferred to Arkansas where he and Grace spent 17 years raising their family in Hot Springs. After an early retirement, Bob and Grace moved to Jackson, GA. where they enjoyed 5 years living life on the lake. Florida was calling to Bob, so they lived in Ocala for the next 5 years. Bob and Grace finally found their cabin in 2005 and have enjoyed mountain life in Murphy, NC for the last 4 years. He loved spending time with his wife, sitting on his deck, and listening to music or reading a book.
Bob had an easy-going personality with a great sense of humor. He was well known for cracking jokes and good cooking. His ?Pop?s Chili? has a unique sweet zest. Family and friends would often request it at gatherings which led to the recipe being shared around the nation. Bob was also known for being a very hard worker. More than anything else, Bob was known for his love and commitment to his wife and family.
In Murphy, he was a member of the Marine Corps League. As a true former Marine, Bob fought a valiant battle in his cancer journey over the past year.
There will not be a funeral or viewing. Cremation will take place this week. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local Hospice in Bob's memory.
Bob was loved dearly. He will be missed by all who knew him and remembered fondly.
