Robert was born December 9, 1925 in Lowell, Massachusetts to the late Leslie & Mildred (Manning) Gross. Robert began his military career of 23 years in the United States Navy, at the age of 17, during WWII. His intelligence and bravery was quickly recognized by his chain of command. He soon became a Naval Aviator flying PBY's in the South Pacific. After the formation of the United States Air Force, Robert transitioned to that branch where he served in a variety of positions until his retirement. Still having an adventurous spirit, he built a 36 ft sailing vessel, and later circumnavigated the globe in it. Next, Robert built a series of kayaks, and one experimental aircraft in his basement, of which he flew on a regular basis.
Robert was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville. Gifted with a servants' heart, Robert worked behind the scenes in the kitchen washing dishes during Wednesday night services.
He leaves behind to treasure his memory: loving wife of 29 years, Janet Gross; son & daughter-in-law, Ronald & Jane Gross; son & daughter-in-law, Ken & Sara Gross; daughter & son-in-law, Louise & Fred Hilton; and sisters, Carolyn Greene and Martha Hentz. Also, sharing in his legacy are 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his late wife, Virginia Gross; his parents, and sister, Ann Gross.
