Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville announces memorial services for Mr. Richard "Dick" Gene Moriarty, age 71 of Blairsville, who passed away on Monday, May 30, 2016 at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia.
Dick was born February 21, 1945, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Helen B. Moriarty and Richard G. Moriarty, Sr. He graduated from South Broward High School in Hollywood, Florida, and entered the U.S. Navy in 1964, and served for four years during the Vietnam War where he maintained aircraft.....Dick was honorably discharged in 1968 as 3rd Class Petty Officer. In 1967 he married Sherry Carnley at NAS Whiting Field Chapel in Milton, Florida. He was interim choir director and Sherry was the pianist when they met. In 1967, Rich Moriarty III was born. Dick attended Pensacola Junior College where he complete courses in Electrical Theory. During the years of 1968 -1971 he was employed with General Electric in Los Angeles, California, and completed technician school and served as a field technician. In 1971 - 1973 he was transferred from California to the GE branch in Pompano Beach, Florida. He served as top field technician and received many letters of commendations. In 1971, Kimberly Moriarty was born. In the years of 1973 - 1975, Dick worked for an independent GE franchise where he managed, sold and continued as field technician. In 1975-1976 Dick stepped out on faith to establish his own major appliance service center without benefit of franchise. In 1976 - 1994, Home Appliance and Repair, Inc. was established by Dick and Sherry in Deltona, Florida. 1975 - 1994 Dick served as an independent service technician for Atchley's Appliance and TV in Orange City, Florida. In 1979, Dick achieved one of his passions and became a pilot for fixed-wing aircraft and was a member of the South Seminole Flying Club. In 1976 - 1984, he offered services and repairs exclusively for government project Deland Housing Authority. In 1994, Home Appliance and Repair, Inc. customer's list was sold to another independent service technician in Deltona, Florida. Again, stepping out in faith under the leadership of his Lord and Savior, Dick and Sherry moved to Blairsville, Georgia. In March of 1994, A-1 Appliance and Air Conditioning Service was established. He served as an independent service technician for Whirlpool Corporation, dropping the air conditioning and became A-1 Appliance Sales and Service, Inc. Dick served in the repair business and loved every aspect of his work for 47 years. In February 23, 1985, he came an ordained Deacon with Southern Baptist Convention in and actively served at Deltona Lakes Baptist Church, later joining First Baptist Church in Blairsville in 1994. Dick loved his church and church family and made it a point to greet every person he could every Sunday morning. He served as Judas in The North Georgia Passion Play for over 12 years, when no one else would take the part. HE was a passionate prayer warrior. He was a loving husband and father. He was a grandfather to 8 and great grandfather to 2. He was blessed to help deliver and be present in the birth of his last two granddaughters. Dick's Spiritual Birth was in 1954, but he experienced a deeper rededication in 1984. His favorite scripture was Proverbs 3: 5-6. His favorite holiday was Christmas because it was his Savior's birth and the most memorable family gatherings were then. Dick's hobbies were spending time with grandchildren and family, flying, motorcycles, and his pet cats. The legacy he wanted to be remembered for was that he was Faithful to his Lord Jesus, Faithful to his family, and Faithful in his work.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Baby Marek.
Surviving family members include his loving wife, Sherry, of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Richard Gene Moriarty, III, and wife Sonda, of Oviedo, Florida; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Butch Marek, of McDonald, Tennessee; seven grandchildren: Justin Richard Moriarty, Daniel Quentin Moriarty, Katie Moriarty Effler, Austin Castle, Natalie Castle, Alexis McKenzie Marek, and Sidney Simone Marek, and two great grandchildren: Savannah Effler and Cale Effler; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda Moriarty Ryle and James M. Ryle, of Catawba, North Carolina.
Memorial services have been scheduled for Saturday, June 25, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., to be held in the Main Sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Blairsville, with Dr. Fred Lodge and Rev. Mel Himes officiating. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be directed to a fund to help the forgotten ones of our community - Dick Moriarty Memorial Fund - at United Community Bank.
