Rev. John Wayne "Big John" Horton

Rev. John Wayne Horton, also known as Big John, age 56, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at Springhill Medical Center. Big John was born July 23, 1965, in Murphy, NC, to the late Fred Horton and Laura Grogan. He is preceded in death by his father, Fred Horton, mother, Laura Grogan, brothers, Clifford Horton and Roy Horton, and brother-in-laws, George Allison and Mike Roberts.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra C. Horton, brother, Troy (Gloria Mae) Horton, sisters, Juanita Allison, Talitha (Robert) Brown, Jeannie Roberts, and Opal Moore, and his beloved dog, A.J.

Big John was of the Baptist faith with Wilscott Baptist Church. Big John enjoyed riding buggies, loved his dogs, loved his church, and Jesus Christ. Big John was a heavy machinery operator for H&L Clearing.

The family will receive friends and family on Sunday, August 29, 2021, from 2:00 pm-3:00 pm with funeral service to follow at Cochran Funeral Home in Murphy, NC. with Rev. Billy Rhodes officiating. Interment will follow after the service at Maltby Baptist Church Cemetery in Marble, NC.

Pallbearers include Jason Bryant, Jimmy Carringer, Michael Carringer, Adam Powell, Shane Allison, Max Garrett, Luke Newton, Bud Horton, and Jonathon Horton. Honorary Pallbearers include Sean Borden, Cole Lovingood, and Luke Garrett.
