Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory announces the death and memorial services for Mrs. Rebecca (Becky) Evans Stone, age 83, of Blairsville, Georgia, who passed away on Thursday, October 28th, 2021 in Blairsville.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Union County on Friday, November 5th, 2021, at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Don Landen and Rev. Bill Edwards officiating. Special music will be presented by Keith DeFoor and Jeff Bauman. The family will meet with friends at the church before the service, starting at 1:30 p.m.
A mask will be required for those attending the gathering and the memorial service.
Becky was born to Robert Hughes and Beulah Lilly Evans on May 11, 1938, in Athens, GA. People are called for many things. Becky was called to teach. Becky obtained a Bachelors’ Degree in Education from the University of Georgia and a Masters’ Degree in Education from the University of Florida. After graduation from the University of Florida, Becky ventured west to Southern California for her first teaching job. Becky returned to Atlanta in 1961 where she taught 5th grade at in DeKalb County and then taught literacy to adults in the “War on Poverty “ Manpower Program and at Atlanta Area Technical School, where she directed the Adult Literacy Program. She married the love of her life, Hugh W. Stone, Sr., on October 1, 1966, in Atlanta, GA. In 1975, Hugh and Becky moved their young family to Blairsville, GA. Becky taught at Woody Gap School prior to obtaining a teaching position as a 2nd grade teacher in Blairsville. She remained at Union County Elementary School as a 2nd grade teacher until she retired in 1998. She loved God, her family, and each and every student she taught.
Mrs. Stone will be fondly remembered by all who knew her, and especially missed by her loving family: husband, Hugh William Stone, of Blairsville; son, William Stone (Cindy), of Blue Ridge, Georgia; and daughter, Beth Hand (David), of Blairsville; grandchildren: Will Stone, Zach Stone, Carolyne Stone, Chance Stone, Chloe Clemmons, Cora Clemmons, Case Hand, and Hailey Hand. Many other relatives and friends also survive.
