Mr. Ray Lewis Dickson, age 79, passed away at his home in Morganton on Wednesday, July 6, 2011.
He was known as Ray, Daddy, Papa, friend and a good man. He was born January 6, 1932 in Iva, South Carolina, to parents Grover Monroe Dickson Sr. and Lillie Bell Gibson Dickson. He was one of 13 children, had 10 brothers and sisters, and two half-siblings. Ray is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sue Vaughn Dickson, daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bruce Fowler; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Bruce Jr. and Heather Fowler; and four great-grandchildren, Celeste, Chandler, Melody and Makenna Fowler. He is also survived by two brothers, William Dickson (Angie) and Grover Dickson Jr., (Faye); two sisters, Maybelle Hayes and Marjorie Durham; and sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Berry Cox; and many nieces and nephews.
Growing up, Mr. Dickson worked the cotton fields alongside his father and siblings. He joined the Army in 1952 and was a Korean War veteran who re-enlisted for three terms before completing his service to his country at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. He then moved his family to Georgia, where he lived for more than 47 years.
He ended his career for health reasons with Atlanta Motor Lines in Conley, Ga.. His hobbies included planting many beautiful flower gardens and wood working in his shop. He gave many friends, neighbors and even first-time acquaintances along his life's journey quilt racks, beautiful picture frames, birdhouses/ feeders and nativity scenes that he had made - just because.
Ray was a longtime member of Mineral Bluff Baptist Church. He loved his church, and worshiping God on Sunday was the highlight of his week. You could always count on a smile and a word of encouragement from the man on the back pew.
Ray was by no means monetarily wealthy, yet he counted himself as one of the richest men in the world. His faith and his family were his riches. We are better people for having known him and loving him. He will never be forgotten.
