Rainer G. Arnold, age 65, peacefully passed away, Monday, January 3, 2011 at Emory Hospital Hospice Care in Atlanta, Georgia following a courageous year and a half battle with cancer. Mr. Arnold resided in Hiawassee, since 2002 with his loving wife Paige and their "child-like" dog Vienna. He was born March 7, 1945 in Sindelfingen, Germany to his parents, Inge Schniertshauer and Erwin Graeter. Mr. Arnold came to the United States and became an American citizen at the age of 13. After graduating from University with a BS in Education, he joined the U.S. Army, served overseas in Korea and achieved the rank of Specialist Sergeant. After leaving the army he married, began a family and started his teaching career at Turner County Hich School whereby he received the honor of "Outstanding Star Teacher" for successive years. Mr. Arnold continued his career in Education earning Masters & Pre-Doctorate degrees and eventually concluded his teaching and coaching for high schools at Dalton High School. Subsequent to a very short lived "retirement", he started his life over by re-marrying and settling in his beloved North Georgia mountain community. His passion for teaching others and his absolute love for soccer led him to be deeply involved with coaching and positively influencing many students in a variety of schools and communities. Never satisfied with being a spectator of live, he continued to successfully pursue vocations in areas that interested him including photo-journalism, appraisal and real estate business, as well as being a local merchant operating Bacchus Wine Shoppe in Hiawassee. Mr. Arnold was a member of the VFW post 7807, Rotary Club, serving as President in 2005, and attended the McConnell Memorial Baptist Church. Always the loving husband, father, opa, brother, uncle, coach and friend, he is survived by his wife, Paige Arnold; his three children: Speedy Arnold, John P. Arnold, and Raina Luke & husband Chris Luke; brother: Deiter Arnold and wife Bernie, and sister: Kerstin Kimmel and husband Gunther, as well as many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
