Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee announces memorial services for Dr. Philip Douglas (Doug) Mansfield, 75, of Hiawassee, Georgia, who died November 4, 2016.
He was born in Glasgow, Kentucky, to the late Arnold and Zada Mansfield.
A small animal veterinarian, Dr. Mansfield began his veterinary career in Glasgow after graduating from Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1967.
Dr. Mansfield then enjoyed a successful private practice in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, until returning once again to Auburn University in 1978. Holding the position of Associate Professor of Veterinary Medicine until his retirement in 2003, allowed him to both treat animals in need of care and provide training and education to scores of veterinary students.
Dr. Mansfield was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, earning Diplomate status. He was a member and past President of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, American Association of Veterinary Clinicians and the American Animal Hospital Association.
Articles and research by Dr. Mansfield have been published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association as well as other trade publications.
Community service was demonstrated by his membership in organizations such as Rotary International, Auburn Arts Association, University Club and Veterinary Career Opportunities Committee, as well as church committees.
Retirement in 2003 meant Dr. Mansfield was able to enjoy time with family and friends as well as his passion for the outdoors. More time for fly fishing, gardening and traveling was aided by his move to the small mountain community of Hiawassee.
Dr. Mansfield is survived by his wife Sheila Mansfield; daughters, Tami Pritchett (Malcolm) and Brooke Core (Dale) of Hopkinsville; a sister Cindi Goslee; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, as well as one niece and one nephew.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 10, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., at McConnell Memorial Baptist Church in Hiawassee. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
