Patricia (Pat) Mason passed away peacefully at her home on June 22 following an extended illness.
Patricia (Pat) Darlene Partin Gregory Mason was born March 12, 1943 to Thelma Callahan and Richie Partin in Barboursville, Ky. Carl Gregory became her daddy when she was 2 years old raising her as his own.
In her 81 years “Pat” was called by many names, Mom, Ninee, Ms. Pat, Big Pat, Momma Pat, Trish (only by her grandmother) and will be remembered for each role she played in people’s lives.
Thelma and Carl worked in the coal mines of Kentucky when Pat was young and eventually moved to Detroit when she was in Middle School. Pat and her cousins were raised by their grandmother Cordia while their parents worked in the coal mine and car factories. When Pat was a junior in High School her family moved to Blairsville, Ga. She graduated from Union County High School in 1961 and was Star Student of the class. She attended North Ga Tech in Clarksville to study business and accounting.
After moving to Blairsville, she met and fell in love with the love of her life, Wayland Mason. She and Wayland married on March 2, 1962 and moved to Atlanta to work. Wayland was drafted in 1963 to serve in the Army. Pat made many trips to Fort Benning while Wayland was training and moved to Virginia with him when he was based at Fort Eustis Virginia. While stationed in Virginia their daughter Sondra was born.
When Wayland was discharged from the Army, they made the decision to move back to Blairsville. Pat took a job working for Lawyer Ben F. Carr as his legal secretary. Mr. Ben and Ms. Austine treated her like their own daughter. While working for Mr. Ben Pat prepared tax returns for clients. When Mr. Ben retired he gave Pat the tax return portion of his business. Pat spent over 50 years doing tax return and book keeping for many in the area.
Pat also had many jobs in Union and Towns Co. She was book keeper at Sky City, Resthaven Florist, Save-a-Lot, Vogel, Dale Shope Construction and Manager of Family Dollar in Hiawassee for many years.
Pat and Wayland were founding members of the Blairsville Jaycees. They helped start the Blairsville Sorghum Festival in 1969 and worked at the festival for many years. Pat also was an organizer first Miss Union County Pageants. Pat and other Jaycee wives spent many hours working on the decorations for the pageants.
Pat took on the role of Girl Scout leader also when nobody else would. She led both daughters’ troops from Brownies to Seniors. She took them on many trips with lots of great and crazy memories.
Pat was devoted to her church up until the time when she couldn’t make it there due to mobility. She was a member of Providence Methodist Church for 48 years. She taught Sunday School, compiled the weekly bulletin, served on the Church Board and made the weekly deposits of the offering. She loved the Lord and spent her morning in devotion until her eye sight didn’t allow her to read. She prayed over her children, grandchildren, and her friends daily.
Pat and Wayland wanted a big family but weren’t able to have one of their own so they adopted. First in 1976 was Sherry, then in 1981 came Tim and David. She loved watching her grandchildren in sports and traveled many miles to watch them.
Their house was also known as the Young Cane Humane Society for years with stray dogs and cats being taking in.
Pat is survived by her daughter Sondra Mason George, Daughter and Son in Law Sherry and Alex Wade, Tim Mason and David Mason.
