Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces Funeral Services for Mr. Olin Hughes, age 93, of Young Harris, Georgia, who passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mr. Olin Hughes was born in Union County, Georgia on August 18, 1923 to Rev. Robert Lee Hughes and Lillie Haseltine (Burns) Hughes. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.Mr. Hughes and his family have been known in the community for making sorghum syrup at their mill in Young Harris. In fact, Mr. Hughes planted his first cane over 71 years ago. He had been a farmer for most of his life. He was a longtime member and deacon at Zebulon Baptist Church. True to his Christian values, Mr. Hughes was soft spoken, kind and generous; always willing to help others. He was not critical of anyone, but advised with a spirit of encouragement.
Mr. Hughes is survived by: his children, Cecil J. Hughes, Elouise Chastain, and Terry L. Hughes all of Young Harris; sister, Sybil Langford; and brother, Worth Hughes. Also, sharing in his legacy are 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Besides his parents, Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lois Bridges Hughes; grandson, Joey Matthew Hughes; brothers, Talmadge Hughes and Pat Hughes; and sisters, Magdeline Anderson, Opal Deyton, Pauline Anderson, and Anna Rose Owenby.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Zebulon Baptist Church with Rev. R.L. Martin officiating. Music will be presented by David & Jackie Chatham and Junior & Carolyn Bridges. Interment will follow at Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Hughes' Grandsons have the honor to serve as pallbearers: Dave Hughes, Shawn Chastain, Jason Chastain, Nick Hughes, Dustin Hughes, and Nathan Hughes. Honorary pallbearers will include the Deacons of Zebulon Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at Cochran Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6 until 9 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
