Ocilla Barfield, 86, a lifelong resident of Blue Ridge, went home to be with the Lord on April 6, 2013 in Peachtree City, Ga. She was born on December 15, 1926 to Buford and Stella Beaver.
In 1941, she was a riveter for Lockheed in Marietta. In 1944, she moved back to Blue Ridge, and eventually took a job at Levi Strauss for 21 years. She retired as an inspector in 1979. She taught clogging, and had a group called Blue Ridge Mountain Cloggers, that performed at local fairs and festivals. They won several awards. Ocilla had a green thumb, and loved planting flowers. She even grew a pineapple plant from the top of a pineapple. She also loved sewing, and making pillows and baby blankets. She had a sunroom full of birdhouses. She was also a hostess on the Blue Ridge Railroad. Her children and grandchildren were her passion, and her home was decorated everywhere with pictures of her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Buford and Stella Beaver; brother, Waldo Beaver; and sister, Lola Howell. She is survived by her two sons, Dennis and wife, Doris, of Morganton, Ga, Denward of Epworth, Ga, and daughter, Rebecca, and husband, Alan of Peachtree City, Ga. Her seven grandchildren are Lisa Bullock, Robbie Barfield, Heather Seagle, Jody Barfield, Amy Hollie, Emily Tabb, and Andrew Henry. She also has 12 great grandchildren. She is survived by her sisters, Nell Jones and husband, JC of Chamblee, Ga; Jo Nelson and husband, Foster of Marietta, Ga; and her brother, Bill Beaver of Marietta, Ga. She is also survived my many nieces and nephews.
Her family wishes to extend heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Southland Nursing Home and Evercare Hospice for their wonderful care during her declining health.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 11, 2013 from 6 – 8pm at Henry Cochran Funeral Home in Blue Ridge. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Henry Cochran Funeral Home on Friday, April 12, 2013 at 1pm. Interment will follow at Sugar Creek Baptist Church.
