Nell Bowen Eskew

February 8, 1917 — August 22, 2014

Mrs. Nell Bowen Taylor Eskew passed away Friday, August 22, 2014 in Hiawassee, Georgia.

Nell was born February 8, 1917 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Roy and Gertrude (Ivey) Bowen. As a member of the "Great Generation", Nell grew up during the depression in West End Atlanta, started a family during WWII, and raised two sons there in Cascade Heights. She sent both to Georgia Tech, and saw them enter military service in the 1960's. During the 1950's, Nell and her husband of 25 years, Henry C. Taylor, would play Canasta with neighbors often. The children would tag along and as rewarded with a "Coke Float" for behaving well. She continued playing Canasta later in life, progressing to Hand-in-Foot playing several times a week. After Mr. Taylor passed away, Nell was blessed to fall in love again with John W. Eskew. They spent the next 22 years together until his passing.
Nell was a special lady, she loved life and her family and was in turn loved by her family and all who knew her.Her sparkling blue eyes and warm smile brightened the room when she entered. Nell was keenly interested in the activities of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Even though some lived 900 miles away, she wanted to know what they were doing. Nell was a great fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball team, following their games on TV. She also enjoyed watching golf on TV and keeping up with the top golfers. Proud of both her sons, who graduated from Georgia Tech, she followed the athletic teams progress every year too. Nell was a longtime resident of Campbell-Stone Apartments in Buckhead, where she touched the lives of many other residents and recently moved to Brasstown Manor in Hiawassee.
Nell is survived by her sons, Henry C. Taylor, Jr. (Patricia) and Thomas Leeroy Taylor (Judy); grandchildren, Scott Taylor (Mia), Keith Taylor (Isamara), Jenny Liedberg (Scott), Jill Lewis (Bryan); stepchildren, John Eskew (Nancy), Doug Eskew (Harriet), Mary Jane Hearn; 7 great grandchildren and 4 step-great grandchildren; sister, Helen Beacham (Wenck) and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husbands, Henry C. Taylor, Sr. and John William Eskew.
