Michael Bernard "Mike" Whatley

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces the death of Michael "Mike" Bernard Whatley, Sr., age 61, of Blairsville, Georgia, who passed away Thursday, December 19, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Mike was a beloved partner, father, son, papa, and brother.

Mike is survived by the love of his life, Rusti Whatley. Mike is also survived by his parents, Bill and Patsy Whatley of Blairsville, as well as his children, Jason and Kayla Whatley, of Sautee, Georgia; Michael "Mickey" Whatley, Jr., of Blairsville; and Beth Whatley, of Blairsville. His beloved grandchildren, Emily Whatley and Michael "Trey" Whatley, III, of Orange Park, Florida, called him Papa. Mike is also survived by siblings: sister Sandi and Paul Richards, of Blairsville; sister Trisha and James Efird of Clemmons, North Carolina; and brother Billy and Gail Whatley, of Brooksville, Florida.

Mike was born in Auburndale, Florida, on February 24, 1952, where he enjoyed racing at Auburndale Speedway until the late 1970's. Before the move to Blairsville, he was an EMT and volunteer firefighter. In Blairsville, Mike was a carpenter. He touched many with his friendly nature and quick wit, having never met a stranger.
