Melvin R. West 71, passed away on November 13, 2010 at his home in Andrews after a valiant fight with cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends.
Melvin was a native of Cherokee County born May 7, 1939, son of the late Arnold and Dessie West. He enjoyed fishing, cooking and gardening. He was a lifetime member of Valleytown Baptist Church and a member of Andrews Masonic Lodge #529 F & AM. He was also a former owner of West Auto Parts and a Cherokee school board member for thirteen years. He retired from P & R Farms in 2003.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife Betty Montgomery West, son, Melvin Mitchel West and sisters, Hermie West Postell and Alma West Postell.
He is survived by his wife of eight and one half years Sara DeLee English West, son, Timothy B. West and wife Carrie of Andrews, daughter, Gail West Hubbard and husband David of Murphy, stepsons, Roger Martin of Manama Bahrain and Darrell C. Martin and wife Virginia of Ware, MI. grandchildren LT J. G. James (Tre') Hubbard III of Corpus Christi, Skyler Hubbard of Raleigh, Michele and Hannah West of Andrews, step granddaughters, Katherina and Kaelyn Martin of Manama Bahrain, sisters, Mary Sue Montgomery of Andrews and Eugene West Guess of Robbinsville, NC and brother in law Arland West of Andrews, numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Services were held Tuesday Nov. 16, 2010 at 2:00 PM from the Valley Town Baptist Church in Andrews with Rev. Paul Jones and Rev. Bobby R. Ammons officiating.A eulogy will be given by Timothy West. Music will be by Brenda Betts, Paul and Carol Jones. The following gentleman served as pallbearers, Ronnie Barton, Wayne Bailey, Earl West, Zelman Clark, Walter Raxter, Pearley Owenby. Honorary pallbearers, J.D. Queen, Maurice Sherrill, Charles West, Todd, Hicks, Gene Waldroup, Bobby Owenby, Glenn Ray LeQuire and L.V. Blaylock.
Interment followed in the Valleytown Cemetery with Masonic rites by the Andrews Masonic Lodge #529 F&AM.
