Melba M. Young Phillips, 85 of Blairsville, Georgia passed away peacefully May 12th at Union County Nursing Home. She was born May 13, 1937 in Dalton Georgia. She passed away one day short of her 86th birthday.
Mom was preceded in death by her father Troy Young and mother Ruby Walls of Dalton.
Melba is survived by her three sons, Alan Franks of Gainesville, Donny Phillips (Sandra) of Suwanee, and Ivan Phillips (Leah) of Cartersville. She is also survived by her grandchildren Seantee McCurdy, Tessy Franks, Lauren Phillips, Blakely Phillips, Hunter Phillips, Ike Phillips, and William Phillips. Mom is also survived by four great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild on the way.
Mom relocated to Blairsville in 1960 and has been in love with the mountain area and its friendly people ever since. She enjoyed time spent with her family, especially at holiday gatherings where she enjoyed cooking and baking for everyone who visited; her meals usually consisted of 3 meats and 12 vegetables and 4 desserts; she was an amazing cook. Many friends and neighbors enjoyed her great talent of baking pies, cakes and soups all made completely from scratch. Through the years mom loved gardening her vegetables and displaying her flowers in her home, canning, baking, mowing the yard, attending to her chickens and keeping a very clean house. Later in life mom enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, listening to Gospel music, playing solitaire, and visiting friends and neighbors. She developed a tremendous passion for reading and enjoyed many types of books.
Melba worked at the Union General Hospital for over 20 years, where she took great pride and enjoyed serving patients and made many friends with the hospital staff. Mom always took pride in working hard and getting it right the first time! Melba retired and later moved to Brannon Lodge where she continued to make close friends with the staff and residents.
All three of her sons would like to say thank you to the many friends and co-workers at Union General Hospital, Brannon Lodge, Traditions Health and Hospice Care of Blairsville, and Union County Nursing Home. We will be forever grateful knowing she was loved, cared for, and her life was made better during her last years. Mom’s testimony of Christian faith was based on salvation in our Lord Jesus. She is now healed and will be with our Lord forever!
