Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces memorial services for Mrs. Mavis Knowles, age 75, of Blairsville, who passed away Friday evening, October 4, 2013, at her home.
Mrs. Knowles was born on April 27, 1938 in Leicester, England, a daughter of the late Francis Edward Saunders and the late Florence Mae Turner Saunders. She grew up during the war years remembering trucks full of American Soldiers as they drove through the village on their way to the Normandy invasion. She met her husband, Louis, while he served in the Air Force and they returned to Georgia to start their family and life together. While living in Missouri, Mavis became a U.S. citizen of which she was enormously proud. Mavis worked at several jobs and retired from the Postal Service as a Rural Letter Carrier. It was her favorite job as it allowed her to meet, talk and make friends with many people. She enjoyed helping others, giving of herself and never asked of anything in return. She enjoyed square dancing, traveling our country, sewing and making her bread pudding for First Sunday dinner at Choestoe Church. She loved her children and grandchildren very much.
Mavis will be remembered by the many friends she has made over the years living and working in Florida. After retiring and moving to Blairsville she met and made more friends who held a special place in her heart. SHe will be missed by her husband, Louis; daughters and sons-in-law, Gina & Mike Turner and Elizabeth & Wayne Fann; son and daughter-in-law, Doug & Patricia Knowles. Also sharing in her legacy are granddaughters, Jennifer (Steven), Erika (Sean), Sara and Rebecca; grandsons, Sean (Sunny) and Colin (Tiara); and great grandchildren, Tristan, Manderley and Masen.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., in the Old Sanctuary of Choestoe Baptist Church. The family will meet with friends on Saturday, starting at 10:00 a.m. until the service hour.
Flowers are being accepted; however, if you wish, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville. Please share your condolences with the family on our website, at www.cochranfuneralhomes.com.
