Marguerite Taylor Abernathy, age 93 of McCaysville, passed away July 31, 2017 at her home. Mrs. Abernathy was born November 20, 1923 in Maryville, TN. A member of Epworth First Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by her parents, Julius Edwards and Myrtle Horner Taylor, her brothers Edward Taylor and Robert Taylor, and her husband, Charles Cutts Abernathy. Mrs. Abernathy attended Ducktown Elementary and graduated from Ducktown High before working on the Manhattan Project at the Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee during WWII. She graduated from Carson Newman College and taught at Ducktown High, McCaysville and Epworth Elementary, and West Fannin Middle School. After she retired form teaching, she worked with her husband at Charles' Home Furnishings. She was a member of the Beulah chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and did calligraphy work for the Georgia Retired Teacher's Association. Mrs. Abernathy was an avid reader and also enjoyed knitting, painting, and traveling with her husband in their R.V.
Survivors include: sons, Charles Brian (Deborah) Abernathy, Allan (Gail) Abernathy, and James (Sandra) Abernathy; grandchildren, Ashley (Scott) McCord, Katrina (Josh) Griggs, Justin (Michelle) Abernathy, Miranda (Jacob) Scarbrough, Alana (Jeremy) Locke; great-grandchildren, Logan Scarbrough, Bronson Scarbrough, and Deacon Scarbrough; sister, Jo (Bill) Threlkeld.
Funeral services: Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at 3:00 pm at the Epworth First Baptist Church with the Dr. Tom Jordan and Dr. Chan Mitchell officiating. Music: Rev. Doug Simonds. Interment will follow in the Epworth First Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers: Steve Cheatham, Harvey Franks, Ronnie Kimsey, Danny Queen, Danny Wilson, and Charles Edwards.
The family will receive friends at the Epworth First Baptist Church Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm.
