Mrs. Lucy Carlton Guthrie, age 95, long time resident of Fannin County, died July 2, 2010, at her home in Epworth, GA.
Lucy was born May 4, 1915 to C.C. and Lessie Carlton. She graduated from Ducktown High School and attended Brenau College in Gainesville, GA. where she received her degree in elementary education. Lucy began her career in the education field in Blue Ridge where she taught for two years. During this time she met and married Travis L. Guthrie. They moved to Epworth where she continued to teach the fourth grade for two years.
In 1946, when Mr. Guthrie became Superintendent of Fannin County Schools, Lucy became the Financial Director for the Fannin County School Board. She worked in this position for 25 years.
This energetic lady was a charter member of the Fannin Regional Hospital Auxiliary where she logged more than 8,000 hours of service. In 2005 she was honored as Auxiliarian of the Year at Fannin Regional Hospital. Lucy was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma Education Sorority.
Through Lucy's years of community involvement she had been an active and faithful member of the First Baptist Church Epworth. She sang in the sanctuary choir for many years and was a member of the T E L Sunday School Class..
She was preceded in death by her husband, Travis Guthrie, Sr., parents, C.C. and Lessie Carlton, brother, Charles Carlton and great granddaughter Amanda Mimbs.
Survivors include, son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Jane Guthrie of Chattanooga, son and daughter-in-law, Carlton and Loretta Guthrie of Dalton, son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Becky Guthrie of Epworth and son, Jerry Guthrie of Atlanta; nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 5, 2010, at 1:00PM from Epworth First Baptist Church with Rev. Chan Mitchell and Dr. Tom Jordan officiating. Music was provided by Doug Simonds.
Interment followed in the church cemetery.
The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Clarence W. Mason, Jr., John Earl Mason, Bill Rush, Ronnie Kimsey, Tom Foster, Charles Smith, Danny Brown and Bob Welch.
