It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Louie “Lou” Lester Summerall on January 18, 2025, in Blairsville, Georgia. Lou was born on October 19, 1945, and throughout his 79 years, he lived a life shaped by service, dedication, and a steadfast commitment to those he loved in the best ways he knew how.
Lou proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, demonstrating his bravery and sense of duty to country. After his time in the military, he continued to protect and serve as an officer with both the Miami Dade and Miami Springs Police Departments. Later, Lou applied his determined work ethic to roles as a crane operator and truck driver—positions that showcased his hands-on, can-do spirit.
A faithful parishioner of Faith Baptist Church in Blairsville, Lou’s devotion to his faith remained a guiding force in his life. Above all, he was dedicated to his wife, Thelma Summerall, standing by her side through every challenge and celebrating every triumph, and he was also her devoted caretaker. While Lou’s relationships with his wider family were not always as close as he wished, he still cared for them deeply in his own way. He is survived by his children—Kevin Summerall, Danielle Summerall-Smith, Doreen Summerall, Lester Summerall, Mac Summerall, Becky Buckett, Christine Graham, Troy Buckett, and Michael Engborg—along with 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Lou’s circle of friendship included his beloved neighbors, David and Linda Wimmers, who shared his company and companionship over the years. In his quieter moments, he enjoyed fishing—a pastime that brought him peace and reflection. Though he preferred the solitude that fishing offered, Lou was always ready with a friendly wave or warm conversation for the people in his life.
In accordance with his wishes, no public services will be held. Those who knew Lou are encouraged to honor his memory in their own personal way—perhaps by spending a calm afternoon outdoors or offering a helping hand to someone in need, reflecting the quiet but determined spirit with which he lived.
Rest peacefully, Lou. May your love for Thelma, your unwavering sense of duty, and your quiet devotion be remembered by all whose lives you touched.
