Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mr. Leroy Elmer Adams, age 89, of Young Harris, Georgia, who passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2013, at his home surrounded by the love of his family.
Leroy was born in Shawneetown, Missouri on December 5, 1924 to the late Arthur & Carrie (Dumbach) Adams. He grew up during the Great Depression and learned the value in saving and making use of everything. Leroy proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army. The skills he acquired during his military service led him to transition into a 30 year career in truck transportation where he was an "over the road" owner/operator. If there was a common theme in his life it was a dedication to the service of others. Leroy saw value in working hard to earn a living for his family because they were what was important in life. He would always manage to provide for them and save a little extra. With a big heart, he gladly would lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Leroy had the constant mindset to always keep moving forward. He was open and honest with his opinions and you could depend on his straightforward answers.
His dedication to the service of others led to active membership in:International Association of Machinists, Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Georgia, Cobb County Masonic Low Twelve Club, Kennesaw 33 Masonic Lodge Constantine , Commandery No.26 Knights Templar, American Legion, Shriners, NRA, Loyal Order of Moose and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
He will be warmly remembered by all who knew him, but especially missed by his family: loving wife, Debra Adams; son & daughter-in-law, Wendell & Joan Ballard; daughter, Cheryl Putman; son & daughter-in-law, Brian & Frances Johnson; son & daughter-in-law, Kelvin & Angela Johnson and son, Matthew Johnson. 5 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren also will share in his legacy. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife, Beatrice Adams; granddaughter's, Cherry Milhollin & Angela Putman and brother, Leonard Adams.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2013 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Claude Smithmeyer officiating. Special music will be performed by Sam Ensley. Interment will be held in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery with Military Honors and Masonic Rites. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Wendell Ballard, Brian Johnson, Kelvin Johnson, Tommy Ballard, Devin Milhollin, John Milhollin and Jason Berry. Honorary escort to the family will include: Terry Hellis, Donald Rollins & Donald Wren. The Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 until 9 p.m.
