Lawrence Ray Bowers II, age 74 of Morganton, GA died July 29, 2017 while recovering from heart surgery. Larry was a gregarious and energetic father and grandfather, and an active member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Blairsville, GA. Larry was born in Whiteville, NC and grew up in the fields and swamps of surrounding Columbus county. After graduating from Mercersburg Academy and St Andrews College, he served as a Captain in the Army Corps of Engineers in Alaska and Korea. With an engineering degree from NC State, he worked in the aggregate industry and finished his career as a VP of Operations at Florida Rock Industries, Inc. in Atlanta.
Larry spent much of his life in service of others, volunteering with the Church, and helping folks in the community. Active in the Boy Scouts for many years, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and received a Silver Beaver award for his work as a Scoutmaster in Troop 282 in Neptune Beach, FL. He could often be found hiking in nature, running on the beach, or canoeing on a river.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence Ray and Julia Vinson Bowers and his sister, Julia "JuJu" Enderle.
Larry is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lillie Tandy Bowers; his sons Jess(Kristin) Bowers of Hillsborough, NC, Rusty Bowers of Atlanta, GA, and Andrew(Cassie) Bowers of Asheville, NC; his grandchildren Stella, Charlie and Elsie Bowers; his brother E. L. Vinson Bowers of Newberne, NC ; his sister-in-law Louise Young of Tennessee; his brothers-in-law Joe Tandy of North Carolina and Jim Helm of Florida; and many nephews and nieces who were dear to him.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Grace Presbyterian Church in Blairsville with Dr. Jon Jacobs officiating. The family will recieve friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made in Larry's memory to the Grace Presbyterian Church, 2310 Young Harris Hwy., Blairsville, GA 30512 or to the North Georgia Mountain Crisis Network, P.O. Box 1249, Blue Ridge, GA 30513.
