LaVerne Walker, 80 years old of Morganton, GA, crossed over to her heavenly home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Thursday evening, March 2, 2023 after an extended illness. After being saved and baptized at 10 years old, she was a lifelong Christian, a Biblical scholar, Sunday School teacher, and a daily Bible reader. She was a devout member of Temple Baptist Church.
She was born in the Wilscot area of Fannin County on June 12, 1942, daughter to Arthur E. and Blanche McDaris Crawford.
She was raised in Morganton and attended Morganton Elementary School and East Fannin High School. After graduation, she moved to the Atlanta area, married her first husband and had two sons. She went to work for Western Electric/AT&T and retired after 30 years’ service. She began her career as a secretary in Western Electric's regional training organization in Atlanta and worked her way up to becoming an instructor teaching digital electronic switching systems. During this time, she met her 2nd husband and love of her life, David Walker, who also was an instructor in the same training center.
After retirement in 1993 & 1994, they moved to Fannin County into their log home, bought an RV and traveled extensively throughout the USA, including Alaska, sightseeing and looking for birds and wildlife. LaVerne was an avid birder and had over 500 species on her Life List. She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband David (44+ years), two sons Ricky Nichols, Randy Nichols (wife Jody) of Acworth, GA, stepson Scott Walker (wife Pam) of Wetumpka, AL, grandsons Trever Nichols (wife Katrina), Wade Nichols, step grandsons Will Walker, Jake Walker, step granddaughter Corrie Walker, brother James Crawford (wife Pat) of Lawrenceville, GA, sister Marilyn Holden (husband Terry) of Chatsworth, GA, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be at Temple Baptist Church in Morganton at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 6 with the family receiving friends and visitors beginning at 12:00 Noon. Burial will be in Concord Baptist Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in LaVerne's name to Gideons International or to the Disaster Relief Fund of Samaritan's Purse.
