Mr. John Oliver Porter, Jr., age 79 of Morganton, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at his home. Mr. Porter was born January 12, 1934 in Fannin County, GA to the late John Oliver Porter Sr. and the late Gertrude Abercrombie Porter Galiher. A member of Concord Baptist Church he was preceded in death by his parents as well as his wife, Diris Aubree Cox Porter, brother, Lloyd Porter, sister, Hazel Watson, brother, Eugene Porter, brother, Wayne Porter, and sister, Martha Hamilton.
Survivors include: son, Lynn Porter, daughter, Sharon (Larry) Hickerson, sister, Grace Groves, sister, Bernice (Raymond) Sword, sister, Christine (Frank) Mathis, sister, Kathleen Porter, sister, Charlotte Bryant, sister, Wanda (Walt) Randall, brother-in-law, Douglas McArthur "Mac" Cox, grandchildren: Mark Anthony, Melissa Ann and John Calvin Porter, Eric and Sam (Amanda Gregory) Jolly, Jordan, and William "Bill" Hickerson, Mindy (Bryan) Vice, Joe Kelly, and Tommy (Trista) Hickerson, great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Samuel Corbin Jolly, Brittany, Tyler, Arianna and Asher Hickerson, Bella Vice and soon-to-be Jaxson Vice, also a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Henry-Cochran Chapel with the Rev. Danny Queen and Minister Lloyd Porter III officiating. Interment will follow in the Hothouse Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers include Jordan Hickerson, Sam Jolly, John C. Porter, Jamie Cox, David Rogers, Eric Jolly, Jeff Porter and Craig Burns. Honorary pallbearers Franklin Wright, Bob Giles and Lloyd "Ernie" Porter II.
The family will receive friends at the Henry-Cochran Funeral Home of Blue Ridge, on Friday, November 8, 2013 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm.
