Dr. Jean Kerschner, 90, of Hayesville, North Carolina, died Friday, August 31, 2012 at her home. She was born May 31, 1922 in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Rev. W. Sherman and Elizabeth L. Kerschner. She was preceded in death by her friend, Dr. Helen Crouse.
Dr. Kerschner was a Professor of Biology Emeritus from 1952-1980 at Western Maryland College, now known as McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland. She received her AB from Hood College in 1943 and her PHD at the University of Pennsylvania in 1950. Her career brought great distinction to the Biology department. She was honored in 1962 with the Distinguished Teaching Award and in 1971 as Outstanding Educator of America. She served as Director of the National Biological Honor Society from 1963-1970. This society is dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research.
Dr. Kerschner was a lover of poetry and literature, an avid environmentalist, a pioneer.
A service will be held at Trinity Reformed Church of Christ in Collegeville, Pennsylvania at a later date.
