James (Jim) E. Collins, age 72, a lifelong resident of Union County, passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2018 in an Atlanta area hospital.
Jim was born Oct. 3, 1945 in Union County to Ulysses Thompson Collins and Victoria Pearl Townsend Collins.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Hilie Jane Parker Collins; daughter, Hilie Janene Collins King; daughter, Jimmie Suzanne Collins; son, Justin James Collins; son-in-law, Mickey King (whom he considered a son); and four adoring grandsons, Mitchell, Ryan, Cole, and Jett.
Jim graduated from Union County High School in 1964. He owned and operated Collins Backhoe Service since the 1960s, allowing him to work outside in the mountains he loved. Jim was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville. He served in the U.S. Army. Jim was also a Shriner, a Freemason and a member of Eastern Star.
A lover of music, Jim could play almost any instrument by ear. He also enjoyed art, especially drawing. Jim loved all things old: history, people, friends, machinery, and cars. He could repair almost anything.
Jim had a soft heart for people with disabilities, sickness, and unfortunate circumstances. He never met a stranger and was known to give generously of his time to help anyone, making lifelong friends along the way. His smile and charming personality could light up a room.
At Jim's request, no services are planned at this time. Those wishing to honor Jim's memory may make a donation to the Union County Historical Society at P.O. Box 35 Blairsville GA 30512.
One other request the family would appreciate would be to perform an act of kindness to someone in need, as Jim was constantly doing, with no thought of recognition. This was his greatest legacy.
