Mr. James Perry Dyer, age 84 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at his home. James was born Saturday, December 22, 1923 in Union Co., GA to the late William Edgar and Bertha Hood Dyer.
James graduated from Union County High School in 1942. He was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran, and served in the European theatre. He was shot down in France and lay for 36 hours in a field, before being found. He was sent to an Army hospital in England where he stayed for 5 months, recovering from pneumonia, surgery from shrapnel wounds to his hips and both legs. Once he learned to walk again he was sent back to France to serve in the 3507 Ordinance Company as a Technician Fifth Grade. James was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, The Expert Badge with Pistol Bar, Bronze Star, Marksman Badge with Carbine Bar, European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and Honorable Service Lapel Button.
James worked for 25 years with Blue Ridge Mountain EMC. He was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church, Allegheny Masonic Lodge # 114 F&AM, Disabled American Veterans,Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion #121.
Survivors include: wife, Betty Rhinehardt Dyer of Blairsville, GA, son, Richard Charles Dyer of Blairsville, GA, son, James Edgar Dyer of Atlanta, GA, daughter & son-in-law, Vicki Lynn and David Owenby of Blairsville, GA, sister, Annie Mae Burnett of Suches, GA, sister, Lois Allen of Lithonia, GA, sister & brother-in-law, Wilma and Almond Mote of Decatur, GA, sister, Genelle Burns of Young Harris, GA, brother & sister-in-law, William Harold and Dolores Dyer of Blairsville, GA, sister, Sarah Ruth Payne of Cleveland, GA, grandson, Dustin Brohns Owenby of Blairsville, GA, granddaughter, Lauren Victoria Owenby of Blairsville, GA.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from the Choestoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Zollinger officiating. The body will be placed instate at the church at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9, Friday, January 18.
