James Newel Johnson

January 24, 1927 — March 2, 2016

Mr. James Newel Johnson, age 89 of Blairsville, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Union General Hospital. Mr. Johnson was born January 24, 1927 in Young Harris, GA to the late Oscar and Bertha Teague Johnson. Newel was a member of Dooly Masonic Lodge #367 F&AM where he served for 19 years as Secretary. He was also a member of Notla Chapter #471 O.E.S. Newell served in the Merchant Marines during WWII from 1944- 1947 and was a Korean War veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force as a Crew Chief. He was preceded in death by Brothers, O.L. Johnson, Jr., Marion T. Johnson, and Lloyd Johnson, and sisters, Mabel Clifton and Naomi Lewis.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Burns Johnson and son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Julie Johnson, 2 grandchildren, James Leland Johnson and Danielle Hooper along with many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 2:00 pm at the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with the Rev. Tony Black officiating. Music will be provided by the Ivy Log Baptist Church Choir. Interment will follow in the Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery with Masonic Rites performed by the Dooley Lodge.

The family will receive friends at the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, Saturday, March 5, 2016, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm.
