James Lee Hooper

James Lee Hooper, age 87 of Hiawassee, GA, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Chatuge Regional Nursing Home.

James Lee was born Monday, August 15, 1921 in Towns Co., GA to the late James Colquit and Sallie Eller Hooper. He attend Upper Hightower School, then joined the CCC's and was stationed at Camp Roundbottom, NC. He then enlisted in the Marines in 1940 and attained the rank of Sergeant. He was in the 1st Marine Division, Battery "H", 3rd Battallion, 11th Marines, and saw foreign service at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Guadalcanal, Melbourne, Australia, Cape Gloucester, New Britain. James Lee was left on Guadalcanal and Talaga until rescued, they almost starved to death, ran out of ammunition and had to fight hand to hand. James Lee was honorably discharged on 12 Dec 1944 and his character was described as excellent.

James Lee was a member of Woods Grove Baptist Church and had served as a Sunday School Teacher and Choir Director.

Survivors include: wife of 62 years, Anna Jo Ledford Hooper, son & daughter-in-law, Larry & Margie Hooper of Young Harris, GA, daughter & son-in-law, Becky & Rodney Underwood of Hiawassee, GA, sister, Clee Scruggs of Mt. City, GA, grandchildren, Darrin Hooper, Mark Dean Hooper, Shawna Renee Collins, five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Burch and Rev. Anthony Dye officiating. Music will be provided by Rita Bradshaw, Kathy Dills and Rodney Underwood and Bobby Taylor. Interment will follow in Laurel Hills Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Darrin Hooper, Mark Hooper, Joshua Hooper, Lon Berrong, Leon Berrong, Calvin Hooper, Michael Hooper. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mark Hooper, Jeremiah Hooper.
