Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mr. James Buford Cook, age 88, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2011, at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Cook was born on April 20, 1922, in Cherokee County, North Carolina, the son of the late Ed and Dessie Cook. He worked for the TVA in 1941 and 1942 on the construction of Nottely Dam. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany, France and Normandy in World War II. He received the Eamet Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars; Good Conduct Medal; AR 600-68 & Victory Medal. During the War his wife Helen worked at Bell Bomber as one of the "Rosie the Riveters".

After the War he and Helen purchased a farm in Union County on what today is John Smith East. He was a hard worker in farming and also worked in construction, loved to burn brush piles and run a chain saw. He was a great fan of his family, and later the Atlanta Braves, Andy Griffith Show, Bonanza, and the Party Line Radio Program. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church of Cherokee County, North Carolina.

Surviving Mr. Cook are his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Helen Cook, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Steve Sullivan of Grayson, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Marcia Cook, of Blairsville; Sisters: Juanita Hedden of Murphy, North Carolina; Winona Hughes of Marietta, Georgia; and Dovie Dean Nelson, of Murphy, North Carolina; Brother and Sister-in-law, David Hillier and Joan Cook, of Kennesaw, Georgia; Granddaughters and Husbands, Kristi and Gavin Holmes, of Atlanta; Julie and Ed Hoff, of Loganville, Georgia; Grandson and wife, Jonathan and Tiffany Cook, of Blairsville; Grandsons: Nathaniel and Matthew Cook, of Blairsville; Great Grandson, Sullivan Holmes. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Clonts and brothers, Von Cook and Clinton Cook.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, March 17, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Jonathan Cook, Nathaniel Cook, Matthew Cook, Gavin Holmes, Ed Hoff, and David Cook. Burial will be in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Murphy. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, on Wednesday evening, after 6 p.m., with the family especially meeting with friends from 6 until 8 p.m.

Flowers are accepted; however, if you desire to do so, memorial contributions may be directed to Macedonia Baptist Church, Cemetery Fund.
