Hugh Leonard Mathis

Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mr. Hugh Leonard Mathis, age 89, of Blairsville, who passed away on Monday, July 8th, 2019 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Mathis was a native of Kingston, Georgia, and was retired from the U.S. Air Force. Following retirement, Mr. Mathis worked as a carpenter for 25 years. He was a member of Mountain Grace Baptist Church in Hayesville, North Carolina, and loved his church family and enjoyed fellowshipping with them. His family will remember him as a loving father and a good husband, and how, throught the years, he enjoyed going on vacation with his family. Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo Mathis and Creolia Cunningham Mathis; sister, Margaret Starnes; and brothers, Vernon Mathis, Willie Ed Mathis, Bobby Mathis, and Roy Mathis.

Mr. Mathis will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but especially missed by his loving wife of 63 years, Clara Sexton Mathis; son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Janet Mathis; brother, Harry Mathis; and sister, Betty Hood; three grandchildren and their spouses: Meghan (Bobby) Brady, Michelle (Larry) Horton, and Amanda (Brandon) Woods; seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Visitation for Mr. Mathis will be held on Wednesday, July 10th, 2019, at Cochran Funeral Home, between the hours of 6 until 8 p.m.

Funeral services have been scheduled for Thursday, July 11th, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., to be held in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Sonny Starnes, Greg Mathis, Russell Mathis, David Hood, Steve Mathis, Robert Mathis, and Mark Mathis. Military honors will be presented by North Georgia Honor Guard. Burial will be in Mountain Grace Baptist Church Cemetery in Hayesville.
