Hugh Dorsey Thornton

Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mr. Hugh Thornton, age 96 of Morganton, Georgia, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville, Georgia.

Mr. Thornton was born in Athens, Georgia, on October 3, 1916, a son of the late Ira Cleveland Thornton and the late Ola Thurmond Miller Thornton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, proudly serving his country in World War II. Mr. Thornton was retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier, and he was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville. Making furniture and creating decorative displays of stained glass were hobbies that he enjoyed, along with boating and fishing. He also was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Woodrow Wilson Chapter #11, Blairsville, Georgia.

Besides his parents, Mr. Thornton had been preceded in death by his step-father, Frank Miller; his first wife, Inez Alewine Thornton, and his second wife, Betty "Ginger" Herrin Thornton; and a brother, Jack Dempsey Thornton.

Mr. Thornton was dearly loved by his family and leaves them to cherish his memory: son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Cleveland Thornton, and his wife, Linda; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda Thornton Lynn and her husband, Joseph; brothers: Ike Cleveland Thornton, of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Basil R. Thornton and his wife Norma of Greensboro, Georgia; Grandchildren and their spouses: Dodd L. Williams and his wife, Tammy; Jeri Lynn Thornton Dalessio, and her husband, Joe; Cindy Thornton Flater and her husband, Greg; all of Blairsville; Great Grandchildren: Keane D. Williams and his wife, Gina; Tony Kluba, Joey Dalessio, Brandon Dalessio, Victoria Dalessio, Brittany Dalessio, Benjamin Flater, and Angel Flater. Great Great Grandchildren: Ashlyn Williams, Rayna Williams, R.J. Dalessio, Cody Dalessio; five nieces, one nephew, and cousins also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Thornton have been scheduled for Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Pastor Ken Zollinger and Rev. Randy Hughes officiating. Specially selected music will be presented by The Hughes Family, and great grandson, Benjamin Flater. Burial will be held in Gordon's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Hull Georgia, on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at 1:00 p.m.. Visitation will be held at Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville on Tuesday evening, August 20, 2013, between the hours of 5 until 7 p.m.
