Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces funeral services for Harry Edward Smith, age 78, who went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 11th, after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born January 31, 1937 in Danville, VA, to the late Ralph Garland and the late Myrtle Haymes Smith. A brother, Ralph Garland Smith, Jr., preceded Harry in death.
A 1956 graduate of Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia, Harry was a member of Tau Delta Tau Fraternity, and served as their National President. Harry was retired as a special metals worker with United Technologies, Pratt-Whitney, in West Palm Beach, Florida. In 1997, he moved from Palm Beach County, Florida to Blairsville. Harry enjoyed fishing and loved sports, and was a fan of the Atlanta Braves, the Florida Gators and NASCAR. Harry was a Christian, and a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville, and a member of the Jesse/Boaz Sunday School Class.
Harry is survived by his wife, Patricia Skaggs Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Victoria and Walter "Bud" Champlin, III; and daughter and son-in-law, Ivy Jo and Gregory Leate; Grandchildren: Valerie Champlin Loyer and her husband, Tim; Joshua Lee Champlin, Welsey F. Champlin, Lacy Nicole Leate, Gregory Joseph Leate, and Christopher James Leate; Great Grandchildren: Zachary Fields (Leate), Nathan Fields (Leate), Morgan Champlin, Joshua S. Champlin, and Rowan B. Loyer; and loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2015, at 2:00 p.m., to be held in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Dick Stillwell and Rev. Danny Parris presiding. The family will meet with friends on Saturday, August 15, 2015, between the hours of 10 until 12 noon. Members of the Jesse/Boaz Sunday School Class are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.
