Grapelle Davis Penland- a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother; a committed Baptist and an early career woman extended her arms to her Savior on Wednesday May 27th, 2020.
Giving, serving, and doing for others were the hallmarks of her life. Born on December 24th, 1928, she grew up in Union County, helping her father and mother on the farm and the family country grocery store. She met her future husband, Ferrell Wyly Penland, and they were married August 5th, 1945, and they had 72 wonderful years together. After their son was in school, she went to work at United Community Bank and was assistant cashier when she retired. The true passions of her life were her family and her church. Harmony Grove Baptist Church is where she taught Sunday school and was secretary, treasurer, and clerk for many years. Grapelle was active in the Notla River Baptist Association and helped start Vacation Bible Schools in the associated churches in Union County in the 1950's. She served as volunteer for the cancer and heart Funds. Mrs. Penland was a blessing to all who knew her, living her life according to her favorite proverb, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him, and He will make your paths straight." Grapelle is preceded in death by her husband, Ferrell Wyly Penland; her mother and father, Lester and Dollie Berry Davis; Brothers, brothers Rouse, Clifford, and sister-in-law Jo Evelyn Davis; sister and brother-in-law Catherine and Frank Jarrett; and bother in laws Emory Abercrombie and Jim Everett.
She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Ronny and Janie Penland; granddaughters and husbands; Julie and Lee Fullbright, Elizabeth and Chris Murphey; 6 great-grandchildren, WJ, Levi, and Janie Fullbright; Reagan Bishop; Chapman and Levi Murphey, and a special niece and nephew Catherine Jarrett Stephens and Justin Jarrett. "Bobo" and "Aunt Bobo" had many other special children. She is also survived by two sisters, Patti Everett and Betty Phillips, two sister-in-laws, Josephine Akins and Betty Davis, and a special niece, Cathy Jarrett.
A drive-in funeral service will be held to honor her life at 4;00pm on Sunday, May 31st, 2020 at Harmony Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Scotty Jarrard and Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating. Rev. Justin Jarrett will officiate a family only graveside service immediately following the funeral service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Harmony Grove Baptist Church.
