Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces the death of Mrs. Evelyn Jarvis Greene, age 92, of Blairsville, who passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mrs. Evelyn Jarvis Greene passed away at home on Saturday, April 26, 2014. Born in Chicago, IL, in 1921, Evelyn graduated from Beloit College in 1943 and married Joseph Nathan Greene. During their 61-year marriage, they raised four children while living in Wisconsin and Ohio. Evie taught at-risk reading students for 10 years in Ohio. In the mid-70s, they moved to Savannah, GA, where Evie continued to teach reading disabled students in both public and private schools. The 12 years she spent tutoring dyslectic adults were a great personal reward and an affirmation of high standards of education.
In 1982 they retired and moved to Ramey Mountain in Hiawassee, GA. When not traveling on Elderhostel trips, Evie was actively involve with Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and Daughters of the King, Licklog Players, and Young Harris College Continuing Education. She taught weaving and quilting at John Campbell Folk School and was a founder of Misty Mountain Quilters' Guild which now numbers 200+ members.
Evelyn has been in Blairsville for 10 years, moving to Wesley Mountain Village in September 2004 when her husband Joe passed away. This was a troubled time for her, but she had many friends and made an effort to fit into her new community. She volunteered for the Union County Historical Society, tutored for GEDs, became a member of St. Clare's Episcopal Church, was President of Daughters of the King, and headed the Prayer Shawl Ministry. She served the Board of Wesley Mountain Village and introduced a Spring Tea Party, a Kentucky Derby, and monthly potluck dinners. To keep her brain sharp she improved her considerable abilities playing bridge.
Surviving relatives are daughters Peg Shaw of Blairsville and Salley and husband Paul Harmon of Granville, OH. Grandchildren are Joseph Nathan Greene III & wife Misty in Indianapolis, IN; Joshua and wife Merve Harmon in Istanbul, Turkey; and Jonathan and wife Paula Harmon in Flagstaff, AZ.
