Eugene "Jack" Elrod
February 4, 1922 — March 20, 2015
Eugene Griffin (Jack) Elrod, 93, of Cornelia, formerly of Murphy, NC, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2015 at home surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Cochran Funeral Home, Blairsville, GA with Rev. Steve Ware officiating.
Mr. Elrod was preceded in death by his wife Vera Simonds Elrod of Murphy, NC. He is survived by his children Gene Ann Hudmon of Lakeland, FL, and Mickey (Debbie) Elrod of Winterville, GA, step-children JoAnne Simonds of Michigan, Gene (Nadine) Simonds of Gray, GA, Mike (Jo Anne) Simonds of Deland, FL, and Pam (David) Ellis of Canton, GA. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
One of eight children, Mr. Elrod was born February 4, 1922 the son of Eugene and Jessie Elrod and brother to Bill Elrod, Dorothy Tate, and Betty Sue Haynes (all predeceased). Surviving siblings are Bobbi Burruss of Marietta, Charles Elrod of Powder Springs, Mary Barrett and Martha Penick both of Cornelia.
After graduating from Cornelia High School he joined the United States Marine Corps where he was awarded the Purple Heart during his service. Following his discharge from the Marines, Mr. Elrod began his career with Davis Brothers Lumber in Cornelia and Robinson Building Supply in McCaysville, GA. He was a long-time member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Murphy, NC. Above all, Mr. Elrod was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who took great delight and pride in his large and loving family.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of The Oaks at Scenic View in Baldwin, who provided compassionate care for Mr. Elrod during his last days. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to any charity of your choosing in Mr. Elrod's honor.
The family will receive friends at Cochran Funeral Home (41 Hunt Martin Street, Blairsville, GA 30512) prior to the service Saturday, beginning at 10:00 am.
